ABOUT HANNAH

Hannah Valentine is a fifth year Architectural Engineering student at The Pennsylvania State University specializing in structural systems.  In May 2016, she will graduate with her bachelor's and master's in Architectural Engineering and honors from the Schreyer Honors College.  She plans to pursue a career in structural engineering and upon graduation will be an Engineer in Training (EIT).

Hannah's professional experience ranges from the design office to the jobsite.  Most recently, she interned with SmithGroupJJR as a structural engineering intern in Detroit, MI.  There she worked with computer analysis software such as Risa 3D, assisted with structural analysis calculations and shop drawings, and gained experience in interdisciplinary Revit coordination.  These experiences built upon her previous internship for The Pike Company as a construction management intern.  During this internship, she spent three months on-site at a Cornell University project coordinating daily construction items and updating project documents.

As a Penn State student, Hannah studied abroad for seven weeks at the Pantheon Institute in Rome, Italy.  Taking courses in architecture, cartography, and daylighting, she explored the other aspects of building design while taking in the structural restoration projects occuring all over the city.  Since then, she has enrolled in the integrated master's/bachelor's program in the Penn State Architectural Engineering department and is currently taking courses in topics such as seismic building design and steel connections.  She participated a semester-long interdiscplinary design studio course, integrating aspects of the Penn State BIM Execution plan into a studio design process.  Working with an architecture student, landscape architecture student, and an interdisciplinary engineering team, Hannah contributed to the building design process as the team's resident structural engineer.

Hannah is the Penn State chapter's Structural Engineers Association president, and two-time attendee of the NASCC Steel Conference.  She has traveled to Panama and Honduras in previous years with the organization Global Brigades.  While there, she and a group of Penn State studentes worked with local communities on various building projects, including a secondary school and medical center.  She hopes to continue both her involvement with SEA and non-profit organizations after graduation.
